Yelp licenses its reviews, photos, and business data to OpenAI, bringing local business results and Request a Quote into ChatGPT

Yelp licenses reviews, ratings, photos, and business data to OpenAI, putting its local business content and Request a Quote flow inside ChatGPT.

Yelp announced a licensing agreement with OpenAI on July 23 that gives ChatGPT access to its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details for local queries, Search Engine Land reports. Yelp branding and links appear when the content shows up in responses, with OpenAI controlling the presentation. Yelp's Request a Quote feature is also coming to ChatGPT, letting users request consultations and appointments with local service providers without leaving the conversation, per Axios, which first reported the deal.

Financial terms were not disclosed, and the agreement is non-exclusive; Yelp already licenses its data to Apple Maps, among others. CEO Jeremy Stoppelman framed the deal as distributing Yelp's content beyond its own properties when it benefits consumers. For OpenAI, the agreement patches one of ChatGPT's known weak spots, local business questions, with two decades of structured reviews and business data.

It is the latest in a run of data deals putting third-party review and commerce content inside assistants, and deals like this decide whose data the model reads when a buyer asks for a plumber or a restaurant. The reviews a business has spent years accumulating on Yelp are now part of the ChatGPT research surface, with a lead-capture flow attached.

The takeaway for brands: every deal like this moves AI models a step closer to the perfectly-informed consumer. A ChatGPT that has read years of customer reviews before recommending a contractor is not forming an impression from your marketing; it is reflecting the market's accumulated perception of your business back to the buyer. That is the trajectory everywhere, not just in local: as models plug into review platforms, marketplaces, and records of real customer experience, what AI believes about your brand converges on what your customers actually think of you. The lever that moves the models is increasingly the one that moves the market: the experience you deliver and the proof it leaves behind.
